About
I was born in downtown Seoul. Growing up in Seoul, nature felt like a park within a partitioned space. I was indifferent to the grass and street trees in front of my house, and the mountains that passed by outside the car window. It was only after traveling in my twenties that I began to deeply observe, sense, and contemplate nature. My work begins with a fundamental question: What is the inherent life that each being holds, not from an anthropocentric observer's perspective, and what kind of universe resides within it? However, this question does not start from something grand. It begins in the kitchen, in the yard, on the street. Since childhood, fried eggs looked like flowers, broccoli looked like trees, and I felt beautiful freedom in scattered perilla leaves. This is not merely metaphorical imagination. I first empathize with objects and discover life, memory, and love within them. The gaze that sees each flower and tree as a precious being, the relationship of grapes that lean on each other and harmonize, a tree that holds big dreams even in a small water basin, a ribbon that stands proudly towards the wide world, not merely an object for decoration. All of these ultimately aim to speak about the dignity of each existence. My work is a record of these discoveries.
