설악산 끝자락의 속초와 고성의 경계지역에 위치한 울산바위는 기암절벽의 극치를 보여주는 한국의 대표적인 관광명소다. 세계 어느 나라의 풍경과 견주어도 뒤지지 않는 자연의 위용과 아름다움을 자랑한다. 해발 873m로 사방이 절벽으로 이루어져 있고, 둘레는 4㎞이며 6개의 봉우리가 어우러져 있다. 웅장한 바위산의 산세와 사계절마다 변화하는 풍경은 우리나라를 대표하는 명산 중의 명산이라고 해도 과언이 아닐 만큼 매혹적이다.
한 해를 마무리하는 12월, 울산바위의 가치에 주목한 여덟 명의 작가가 모여 ‘아! 울산바위’展을 연다. 울산바위의 아름다움과 독특한 존재감을 작가들의 개성 넘치는 시선으로 재해석해 수묵화, 유화, 사진, 설치 등 다채로운 예술작품으로 선보이는 전시다. 특히 풍경화 뿐 아니라 인물화, 상상화를 그리는 작가들도 참여해 다양한 해석과 시각으로 울산바위를 표현했다.

김문생은 울산바위에 얽힌 다양한 설화적 요소를 유머러스하게 재해석했고, 윤기원은 인물과 울산바위를 결합해 재치 있고 컬러풀한 현대적 풍경을 그렸다. 나형민는 해와 소나무, 하늘과 커다란 보름달을 배경으로 동화적 상상력을 담은 울산바위를 표현했다. 문기전은 외부의 풍경이 아닌 감각과 기억이 결합된 내면의 울산바위를 그렸고, 지오최는 부처와 나무, 영랑호와 그 주변의 이야기를 변주한 판타지적 울산바위를 완성했다. 김민호는 사진 이미지의 축적을 통해 연속된 시간과 공간이 이어지는 울산바위를 표현했으며, 박경민은 울산바위와 설악산의 암봉들을 필선을 여러 번 중첩한 ‘추상풍경’을 만들어냈다. ‘아! 울산바위’展을 기획한 추니박은 고불고불 라면준을 활용해 풍경에 점경 인물, 자동차, 패러글라이더 등을 더한 현대판 산수화로 울산바위를 재해석했다.

Ulsanbawi, located in the border area of Sokcho and Goseong at the foot of Seoraksan Mountain, is a representative tourist attraction in Korea, showcasing the pinnacle of unique rock formations. It boasts natural grandeur and beauty comparable to any landscape in the world. At an altitude of 873m, it is surrounded by cliffs, has a circumference of 4km, and features six peaks. The majestic mountain scenery and the changing landscapes throughout the four seasons are so captivating that it is no exaggeration to call it one of Korea's most famous mountains.
In December, as the year draws to a close, eight artists focusing on the value of Ulsanbawi come together for the 'Ah! Ulsanbawi' exhibition. This exhibition reinterprets the beauty and unique presence of Ulsanbawi through the distinctive perspectives of the artists, presenting diverse artworks including ink paintings, oil paintings, photographs, and installations. Notably, artists who paint not only landscapes but also portraits and imaginary scenes participated, expressing Ulsanbawi with various interpretations and viewpoints.

Yoon Ki-won, Ah! Ulsanbawi, 100x100cm, Acrylic 2025
Kim Moon-saeng humorously reinterpreted various mythical elements associated with Ulsanbawi, while Yoon Ki-won combined figures with Ulsanbawi to create witty and colorful modern landscapes. Na Hyung-min depicted Ulsanbawi with fairytale imagination against a backdrop of the sun, pine trees, sky, and a large full moon. Moon Ki-jeon painted an inner Ulsanbawi, a combination of sensations and memories rather than an external landscape, and Jio Choi completed a fantastical Ulsanbawi, a variation of stories involving Buddha, trees, and Yeongrangho Lake and its surroundings. Kim Min-ho expressed Ulsanbawi as a continuous time and space through the accumulation of photographic images, and Park Kyung-min created an 'abstract landscape' of Ulsanbawi and the rock peaks of Seoraksan by layering brushstrokes multiple times. Chunee Park, who planned the 'Ah! Ulsanbawi' exhibition, reinterpreted Ulsanbawi as a modern landscape painting by using winding ramen noodles and adding small figures, cars, and paragliders to the scenery.
