11월 11일까지 미국 LA, EK아트갤러리에서 부부 초대전
지오최·추니박 작가 대표작 각각 40점씩 총 80점 전시

고글인가? 선글라스인가? 달걀 프라이 노른자가 뭔지 모를 글래스를 착용하고 하늘을 난다. 달걀 프라이 한 개도 아닌 무려 다섯 개. 그 달걀 프라이 하나하나마다 끈에 매달린 ‘빨간색 하트’가 선명하다. 여기까지도 신선하고 낯선데 그 아래 바닷가에서 그저 앉아 있는지 바다 멍을 하는지 알 수 없는 기린에 시선이 꽂히면 순간 혼란스러워진다. 이것은 풍경화인가? 추상화인가? 동양화인가? 서양화인가? 경계선이 뚜렷하지 않은 애매함은 오히려 “그렇지. 이게 예술이지” 하는 감탄사로 귀결된다. 시간이 흐를수록 도리어 더 뚜렷해지는 지오최(최현주) 작가의 작품 ‘행복한 비행’의 첫 인상이다.
“달걀 꽃을 아시나요?” 지오최(최현주) 작가가 누구를 만나든 가장 먼저 하는 질문이다.
“그 달걀을 인간이 먹지 않았다면 아마 생명으로 태어날 수도 있었겠죠. 그런 생각을 하면서도 접시 위에 올려진 따뜻한 달걀 프라이를 바라보며 미안함보다는 ‘아름다운 꽃’ 아닌가 하는 생각을 하곤 했어요. 먹고 없어지는 달걀 프라이에 생명을 불어넣을 수 있다면, 그걸로 달걀 프라이에 대한 미안함을 조금은 씻을 수 있지 않을까... 그래서 제 작품 속에서 달걀 프라이는 꽃도 되고, 생명을 키우는 땅도 되고, 사랑을 전달하는 행복한 비행사도 되고...”
작가가 직접 얘기하는 대표작 계란후라이 연작 탄생 배경이다.

지오최 작가와 추니박는 10월 21일부터 11월 11일까지 LA에 위치한 EK아트갤러리에서 첫 해외 개인전을 엽니다.
둘은 홍대 동양화과에서 선후배로 만났다. 추니박 작가가 1년 후배. 추니박과 지오최 작가는 “끝까지 그림의 길을 향해 뚜벅뚜벅 걸어갈 것 같은 느낌이 좋았다”고 입을 모았다. 그렇게 연애를 하고 결혼을 하고 (한예종에서 파인아트를 전공하는) 아들을 낳고 30년 넘게 전업 부부 작가로서의 삶을 살고 있다. 그 와중에 아들이 중학생일 때 자퇴시키고 1년 동안 세계여행을 하는 승부수를 던졌다. 그 경험이 한예종 입학에 성공한 아들과 부부의 제2의 작가 인생을 만들어낸 토양이 됐다고 믿는 두 사람이다.

“나는 한국의 아름다운 사계절을 어떻게 현대적인 감각으로 재탄생시킬 것인가에 대해 오랫동안 고민하고 연구해왔다.”
추니박 작가는 2000년대 초반부터 한국의 자연 풍경을 새롭게 해석한 다양한 산수 풍경 시리즈로 이름을 얻었다. 한국과 해외의 오지를 여행하며 얻은 경험과 영감을 바탕으로 낯선 어떤 풍경, 채집된 산수, 흐린 풍경, 검은 풍경, 흐르는 풍경, 힐링의 숲, 침묵의 숲 등의 다양한 풍경을 눈에 담고 손에 잡아 작품으로 승화시켰다.
추니박 작가의 풍경화 역시 동양화인지 서양화인지 명확하게 경계를 가를 수 없는 지오최 작가 작품과 맞닿아 있다. 사실과 추상을 넘나드는 것은 물론 한지 위에서 자유자재로 선을 뻗은 아크릴 채색은 추니박만의 독특한 산수풍경 화법을 완성하는 데 한몫 단단히 했다. 2015년 베니스 비엔날레 특별전으로 베니스 카포스카리 대학미술관에서 초대전을 진행하고 2019년 LA아트쇼 아시아잉크페인팅 특별전에 초대돼 높이 195cm 길이 34m의 대형 수묵화를 선보인 게 저절로 이뤄진 게 아님을 보여주는 단면이다.

LA EK갤러리 부부 개인전이 그냥 성사된 것 또한 아닐 터. 두 사람의 작품이 미국에서 관심을 끄는 확연한 이유가 있다. 캔버스에 아크릴로 그렸으니 분명 서양화 같은데 원근감이 없고 색채와 채색도 어딘가 낯설고, 여백도 풍부하고, 뭔가 서양화 같지 않은 느낌이 담뿍 배어 있는 것이 오히려 서양인들 관심을 끌었다. “동양화를 전공한 것이 이렇게 작품 세계를 풍부하게 만들지 당시에는 미처 몰랐다”고 얘기하는 두 사람이다.
각각 40점씩 총 80점의 작품을 미국 관객 앞에 선보인 부부는 “자연으로부터 부여 받은 고귀한 생명이 가져야 하는 꿈과 소망에 대한 이야기를 하고 싶었다. 단순한 시각적인 즐거움을 넘어 우리가 살아온 삶의 여정과 경험에 깊이 공감하며 감상해주길 바란다”고 밝혔다.

Couple Invitational Exhibition at EK Art Gallery, LA, USA, until November 11
A total of 80 works, 40 each from artists Jio Choi and Chunny Park, on display

Are they goggles? Or sunglasses? An egg yolk wears an unknown type of glasses and flies through the sky. Not just one fried egg, but five. On each fried egg, a 'red heart' hanging by a string is clearly visible. This alone is fresh and unfamiliar, but when your gaze falls upon a giraffe sitting by the sea below, seemingly lost in thought, a moment of confusion arises. Is this a landscape painting? An abstract painting? An East Asian painting? A Western painting? The ambiguity, without clear boundaries, rather leads to an exclamation of, "Yes, this is art." This is the first impression of Jio Choi's (Choi Hyun-joo) work 'Happy Flight,' which becomes clearer with time.
"Do you know egg flowers?" This is the first question Jio Choi (Choi Hyun-joo) asks anyone she meets.
"If humans hadn't eaten those eggs, they might have been born as living beings. Even as I thought about that, looking at the warm fried egg on the plate, instead of feeling sorry, I often thought, 'Isn't it a beautiful flower?' If I could breathe life into a fried egg that is eaten and gone, perhaps I could somewhat alleviate my apologies to the fried egg... So, in my works, the fried egg becomes a flower, land that nurtures life, and a happy aviator delivering love..."

Artists Jio Choi and Chunny Park are holding their first overseas solo exhibition at EK Art Gallery in LA from October 21 to November 11.
They met as senior and junior in the Oriental Painting department at Hongik University. Chunny Park is one year junior. Chunny Park and Jio Choi both said, "We liked the feeling that we would steadily walk the path of art to the end." They dated, married, had a son (who majors in Fine Art at Korea National University of Arts), and have lived as full-time artist couple for over 30 years. During that time, when their son was in middle school, they made the bold decision to have him drop out and travel the world for a year. They believe that experience became the foundation for their son's successful admission to Korea National University of Arts and for their second artistic lives as a couple.

"I have long contemplated and researched how to re-create Korea's beautiful four seasons with a modern sensibility."
Chunny Park gained recognition from the early 2000s with various landscape series that reinterpreted Korea's natural scenery. Based on experiences and inspirations gained from traveling to remote areas in Korea and abroad, he captured and transformed diverse landscapes such as unfamiliar scenery, collected landscapes, hazy landscapes, black landscapes, flowing landscapes, healing forests, and silent forests into his works.
Chunny Park's landscape paintings also resonate with Jio Choi's works, where the boundaries between East Asian and Western painting are not clearly defined. Beyond traversing between reality and abstraction, the acrylic coloring with freely extended lines on Hanji has played a significant role in completing Chunny Park's unique landscape painting style. This is evident in his invitational exhibition at the Ca' Foscari University Art Museum in Venice as a special exhibition for the 2015 Venice Biennale, and his presentation of a large-scale ink painting, 195cm high and 34m long, at the 2019 LA Art Show Asia Ink Painting Special Exhibition, which did not happen by chance.

The couple's solo exhibition at EK Gallery in LA must not have happened by chance either. There is a clear reason why their works attract attention in the United States. Although painted with acrylic on canvas, clearly resembling Western painting, the lack of perspective, unfamiliar colors and coloring, abundant empty spaces, and a distinct non-Western feel have rather captivated Western audiences. The two artists say, "We didn't realize at the time that majoring in East Asian painting would enrich our artistic world so much."
The couple, who presented a total of 80 works, 40 each, to the American audience, stated, "We wanted to tell stories about the dreams and hopes that noble life, bestowed by nature, should possess. Beyond simple visual pleasure, we hope that viewers will deeply empathize with and appreciate the journey and experiences of our lives."
