[Artist Interview] An Imaginary Garden Where Dreams and Reality Intersect: The Art World of Jio Choi
Artist Jio Choi is a creator who records her life through painting, weaving everyday objects, nature, and travel memories with surreal imagination onto canvas.
Through this interview, we introduce the artistic values she pursues and the warm narratives hidden within her works.
1. Surreal Icons Drawn from Everyday Life: 'Fried Egg' and 'Plants'
The most striking motif in the artist's work is the **'fried egg.'** Having been strongly impressed by the aroma and shape of fried eggs her mother made in her childhood, the artist
reinterpreted it as an **icon of life and death**, representing life that could not be born but bloomed as a flower. In particular, a fried egg with a ribbon symbolizes the 'gift' of her son, obtained after six years,
and the preciousness of life, showing a vitality that shines like the sun.
Furthermore, she expands ordinary plants around her into **tools of imagination**, such as viewing broccoli as a giant tree or empathizing with the layers of cabbage as human wounds and emotions.
2. The Meeting of Eastern Emptiness and Western Surrealism
The artist, who majored in Oriental painting, is familiar with the **material properties of ink, brush, and hanji** due to the influence of her calligrapher family. While primarily using acrylics on canvas, she sculpturally arranges the **sense of line and the beauty of emptiness** characteristic of Oriental painting, adding depth.
The artist admires surrealist artists like Magritte and Dalí and enjoys using the **'dépaysement'** technique, which mixes memory and reality to create an unfamiliar pleasure. This is Jio Choi's unique painting style, created by the organic connection of different memory neurons.
3. Travel, Inspiration from 'Topophilia'
A year-long world trip with her family in 2012 became an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the artist.
- Ashoka Series: The Ashoka flower, a 'worry-free tree' encountered in India, received great acclaim in overseas exhibitions and is loved as a painting that brings good fortune with its oriental charm utilizing mother-of-pearl.
- Attachment to Place: 'Topophilia,' a deep attachment to specific places such as memories of living in Berlin for a month, is recorded as a warm narrative of memories through repetitive series.
4. Unceasing Records, A Fierce Routine Towards Becoming an Artist
Artist Jio Choi is a **fierce full-time artist** who, even amidst childcare and her life as a university educator, never put down her brush from 10 PM until dawn. She says, "Painting is like an athlete's training,"
and maintains a state of immersion by adhering to a regular daily routine.
Recently, she continues to experiment across genres, including art collaborations with Samsung Electronics, cosmetic package design, media art, and NFTs, conveying a **message of healing and peace**.
