Artist's Statement - Poet's Garden (About Hangeul)

한 국가의 언어는 민족을 하나로 결속시키는 매우 중요한 도구이다.
나는 인간이 살아가는데 있어 가장 중요한 것을 ‘땅’과 ‘언어’ 그리고 ‘문화’라고 생각한다.
일제의 탄압에도 끝까지 굴하지 않고 철창사이로 보이는 밤하늘의 별을 보며 어머니와 고향을 떠올려 아름답고 정갈한 필치로
한자 한자 또박또박 써내려 갔던 윤동주의 시는 그 자체로 감동적이다. 그의 시에 사용한 단어와 필치는 시인의 의연하고 굳건했던 저항정신과 의지가 담겨있다. 나는 그가 그토록 지키려 했던 민족정신과 나라사랑을 한글로 만든 집, 즉
‘둥지’로 표현했다. 그리고 감옥에서 모진 고초를 당하면서도 끝까지 자신을 지키려했던 그의 순수한 정신을 ‘생명을 잉태한
계란 꽃’으로 은유해 아름다움과 귀함을 강조하려고 했다.
그리고 두 손에 담아 뿌려지는 물은 우리 민족의 핏줄과 생명수라고 은유했다. 그 생명수는 바로 우리가 사랑하는 그리고
우리를 하나의 민족으로 이어주는 한글이다.

A nation's language is a crucial tool that binds its people together.
I believe that the most important things in human life are 'land,' 'language,' and 'culture.'
Yoon Dong-ju's poems, written with beautiful and neat brushstrokes, syllable by syllable, as he looked at the stars in the night sky through prison bars, recalling his mother and hometown despite the oppression of the Japanese colonial rule, are moving in themselves. The words and brushstrokes used in his poems contain the poet's steadfast and firm spirit of resistance and will. I expressed the national spirit and patriotism he so desperately tried to protect as a house made of Hangeul, that is, a 'nest.'
And I tried to emphasize the beauty and preciousness of his pure spirit, which he maintained to the end despite severe suffering in prison, by metaphorically representing it as 'egg flowers' that conceive life.
Furthermore, the water poured from two hands is a metaphor for our nation's bloodline and the water of life. That water of life is Hangeul, which we love and which connects us as one people.
