Artist's Statement on the Four Gracious Plants

My work on the Four Gracious Plants began by depicting dew-laden, swaying bamboo and orchid leaves adorned with seven rainbow colors on the canvas. How can the 'Four Gracious Plants' of traditional East Asian painting, a tradition spanning hundreds of years, be reborn with a sensibility that resonates with us living in this era? Can they approach us with the vibrant emotions of today, rather than as stuffed specimens trapped in conceptual frameworks? My work starts from this persistent questioning.

If the literati of the Joseon Dynasty sang of integrity, fidelity, and loyalty through plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo, for me, living in the present, the Four Gracious Plants are closer to extended natural objects encountered in daily life. Just like the nameless wildflowers and weeds blooming in a flowerbed, and the trees in a field, the Four Gracious Plants are not museum objects but real presences that breathe and are felt in my surroundings.

On this continuum, my plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo sometimes embrace traditional contexts, but at other times, they become a medium for remembering the air and place of a day encountered while traveling to unfamiliar places, and they also convey my extremely private and intimate stories.

Having left the scholar's room, the Four Gracious Plants have also erased the boundaries of materials. Not confined to traditional media like hanji and ink, I boldly incorporated acrylic on canvas and a variety of colorful objects. Through these variations, I seek to strip away the conceptual grime covering the Four Gracious Plants and fully capture the vivid memories and raw emotions born from my reality.
